T-Shirt/Apparel
This GAP short-sleeve v-neck cotton T-shirt features a magpie, as mentioned in "All the Fun Parts Sanded Off" from Spelling Reform's 2019 album Stay Inside. Design by Philadelphia designer, illustrator and artist Rita Carroll (www.rita-carroll.com).
Philadelphia indie rock/power pop group Spelling Reform has yet to find a song its members couldn’t fill with starts and stops. Those dynamics are there, for sure, on the band’s new single, “(I’m Believing) The Same Thing,” but the group also manages to settle into a rare tappable groove here. Propelled by the careful rhythm work of founding members Mark Rybaltowski (drums) and Tom Howley (bass), the song leans into the “pop” in power pop — especially in its super-full chorus — while lead singer Dan Wisniewski spouts off assuredly obscure asides about fact checkers and marathons that eventually reveal a contemporary push-and-pull story.
“The song digs into the passive behavior that makes up the worst parts of ‘male’ culture,” Wisniewski said. “The narrator keeps listening and believing his friend’s boasts about sexual exploits, even when they’re fabricated to some degree. Why does he react the way he does, and what is he doing with that mix of horror and fascination he feels? Like all the tunes on the new record, this song is less about judging someone else’s actions and behaviors and more about reflecting on what’s going on inside. Anyone who’s listened to other Spelling Reform stuff or my previous tunes with The Quelle Source knows that’s a pretty sizeable shift.
“Musically, the song embodies most of what I think makes the record a step forward (or at least a step to the side) for us: longer songs, more choruses, more synth. I’m particularly fond of the engaging but not busy instrumentation, the melodic tremolo’d guitar solo, and the subtle but crucial synth work from me and our newest member, Jim Gannon.”

lyrics
The slipping and sliding, it never gets tiresome, he says — like running a marathon and then running it again. And it’s hard to believe, but the rubes like me eat it up like he makes out.
The marketing arm of the organization’s well funded (or so I hear about every few months from the finance department). So, come on, raise a toast to the Bragging Ghost — he says everyone is coming.
I’m believing the same thing. The “I believe it because” thing. The “I know it’s not even real” thing. I’m believing the same thing.
The way that he tells it, it seems there’s a never-ending noise. At least one person is thinking to keep the fact-checkers employed. What’s a lie with a friend? This is a conversation — and that’s someone else’s daughter.
